Weekend project: Spotify podcast feed application
Lot of streaming platforms have caught the wave and shipped their podcast products to take their bite in the upcoming podcast era.
Fortunately all the shows I’m interested in started to share their podcasts on all platforms including Spotify. Checking of new podcast episodes in the Spotify app has taken a place in my breakfast/pre-work time when I’m usually checking to-dos, calendar, emails, etc.
I started to miss one place in the Spotify app in which I can just check new episodes and go away or start to listen. I thought that when I started to follow my favorite shows there would be some list, page or feed of new episodes in the Spotify app but I didn’t find anything like this. There was just a “playlist of recommended podcasts” but that is different.
Next thing that came to my mind was “Hey! If there is an API that can serve me shows and episodes…”. Well. My next weekend project was clear.
Product “design” was very simple — web app/PWA containing a login page and feed of podcasts. No special design tweaks — Spotify colors, buttons, that’s all. I didn’t realy want to spend a lot of time on it, so I used proven technologies that I use at work every day — React, NodeJS, Google Cloud, Github Actions, parcel-bundler.
In the end the whole project took a little bit more time than weekend but it was mainly because I wanted to do it without bullshiting, creating workarounds, etc.
